It’s a fact of life, sometimes, that the people who loved, raised us and cared for us when we were growing up – our parents – need help as they get older. Depending on finances and other circumstances, older adults may move into independent or assisted living senior citizen homes, but a far greater percentage are now moving in with their children and grandchildren.
At Snider Homes, we’ve been a family owned business since 1919, and we understand the unique needs of older parents and the challenges they present to family members who take their loved ones into their homes. If you’re thinking of renovating an existing space or building an addition to your home, to accommodate an in-law suite, no company in the Greater Toronto Area has a more experienced or caring staff than Snider Homes.
Because of our long history of quality service and innovative designs, renovations, and new construction, we’re uniquely positioned to make improvements to your residence that will allow your older loved ones to enjoy the quality of life they deserve in a safe, comfortable, and familiar setting. In our experience, in-law suites have changed greatly over the years. Whereas they were once merely spare bedrooms or extra closet space, today’s in-law suites are spacious, multi-purpose areas of a home that afford your loved ones privacy, convenience, and independence.
At Snider Homes, our designers and consultants work with homeowners to customize a plan that fits into a variety of project types, such as: renovation of existing space, remodeling space above a garage, designing and building a basement in-law suite or full addition, or other changes to a single room.
From the initial discussion to the in-home consultation, our team works with the latest 3D software to render plans in stunning clarity, giving homeowners a clearer picture of what the new in-law suite will look like. Our plans include full-colour renderings of architectural designs, including the placement of furniture and appliances, and the location of doors, windows, and power outlets.
One of the things we stress, however, is that in-law suites can serve multiple purposes and will recoup their expense over the long run as they increase the resale value of a home if, and when, the space is no longer needed for its original purpose. At some point, the suite may have income-earning potential from tenants, or serve as a temporary home for adult children who have moved back in, or guests from out of town who need a place to stay.
To get started, we work with homeowners to determine specific eldercare needs, and how they can be met with features such as video monitoring equipment and special access doors, among many others. Next, we begin sketching out the floor plan after determining how many rooms will be required. Today’s in-law suites can include multiple bedrooms, walk-in closets, spacious bathroom and shower facilities, living and dining rooms, fully equipped kitchens and laundry rooms, and separate entrances and exits.
