It all began in 1919 in Windsor, Ontario. Mary Perlmutter, then just a teenager, opened up a furniture store called Dominion Furniture. Working diligently through hard times, she kept the store in business by offering excellent quality at affordable prices. She even allowed her clientele to take as long as they needed to pay their bills interest free! Offering credit on the spot to anybody that walked in the door, and free at that, was unheard of in those times, and still even to this day! It was, however, that honest, integral and helpful attitude that kept the store in business for so long. This was the secret to their success. Mary raised both her son Morris and grandson Sandy in the company, making Dominion Furniture a 3-generation, family-run business 40 years later.
As the years went on, competition grew in Windsor, and the family needed to make a decision. Go big or go home, as they say! Expand and grow the business, or be eaten up by the bigger companies coming into the marketplace. So at the tender age of 15, in 1965, grandson Sandy Snider, the current owner and Operator of Snider Homes, used all of the money that he had saved up from his paper routes over the years and purchased a piece of land for his Grandmother to build a newer and bigger store. Well known clients of Dominion Furniture, the Deluca Brothers Construction Company was hired to build the new store. In order to save money and ensure the project was affordable, Sandy offered up his own hands as free labour to assist in any way possible with the construction. This became a critical turning point in the history of our family’s business, as the Deluca Brothers accepted his offer and had no qualms about putting him to serious work! Sandy ended up learning every single one of the construction trades on this project, starting with the foundation and right on up to the roof, including all framing, plumbing, electrical, interior finishing and so on. With all of this new-found knowledge and experience, Sandy brought a new era of service offerings to the family business in the new store. Instead of just selling furniture and appliances, they began to offer interior design and renovations to their many loyal clients as well.
Sandy eventually went on to study at the University of Toronto to earn his Bachelor of Science Degree considering his childhood dream to become a doctor. However, the years of working in his family’s furniture store left such a lasting impression on him that he decided to continue in that direction. So he then studied at the New York School of Interior Design and became a certified Interior Designer. Joining forces again with the family business, Sandy worked with his grandmother until she finally retired at age 89, at which point, he moved the business to Toronto, his new found home with wife and children, and renamed the company S.M. Snider Interiors and Exteriors.
Generation number four in our company is Sandy’s son, Zack Snider. He too grew up working with the family business from a very young age, however, he also maintained an active entrepreneurial career of his own. In addition to helping out Dad on the jobs, setting up home show displays and coordinating marketing efforts for the company, Zack had his own business that organized and hosted live concert productions. While studying at the University of Guelph to earn his Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Marketing Management, he also had a student travel business and later founded the Guelph Student Savings Program that advertised for local businesses that offered exceptional student discounts. Through the co-op designation of his degree, he worked with the National Marketing Manager of Stryker Canada to launch a ground-breaking product for the Global Medical Devices corporation and consulted with The Greater Toronto Airports Authority on the new management of Toronto Pearson International Airport. Finally, before joining forces with the family business full time early in 2010, Zack took over the management of a printing company that was thirty-five percent in the red and spent one year turning it around to profitability. With all that experience under his belt, Zack was finally ready to join his family in business full time, bringing all of his knowledge and expertise to the table, and it came as no surprise that his first real project to lead, after months of training and orientation, was the re-branding of the company.
With over 30 years of experience in the Greater Toronto Area, we had found our scope of work on projects getting larger and larger. We came to a point many years ago where we could and were doing anything and everything to a home or office, including building it from scratch. That is why we eventually decided to update our company’s name to something that was more appropriate to the type of work we were doing, something easy for people to remember, yet something that would retain the family roots and heritage. So in June 2010 Snider Homes was born, as we can and will do ANYTHING for your home!
